If you travel frequently, whether for work or pleasure, you are likely to have to consider adding pages to your passport. A standard booklet has 24 visa sheets. If these are filled with visa stamps the document is no longer usable so must be submitted to the State Department to have another 24 visa pages added.
If there are no remaining blank sheets in the booklet or your second valid U.S. online passport, you will immediately require this service to travel internationally or obtain visas. If possible, consider applying when there are a few remaining blank pages rather than when the booklet is completely full. Certain governments will refuse entry if you do not have two or more blank pages.
Applications for additional pages should be sent to the Department of State, which is responsible for travel documents and visas. To apply, you must have a passport that is valid for at least one more year. If this is not applicable to you, you should instead submit to be issued with a passport or to have one renewed.
To have a request processed, mail the passport booklet and application form to the appropriate State Department address (printed on the relevant DS-4085 form). For the standard service, there is an application fee of $82 dollars. By mail, the fee can be paid using a personal check or money order. At passport agencies or acceptance facilities, you may be able to pay using credit cards or cash.
In the event that forms are incomplete or incorrectly filled out, the application will not be processed and the fee will still be charged. For your own convenience, ensure that the application is completely and correctly submitted. It is also strongly recommended that you use secure, traceable methods of delivery and packaging for the safety of valuable documents. Allow ample time before you next plan to travel, as at the standard rate this amendment takes four to six weeks.
The department also provides the option of an expedited service for an additional fee of $6o and a further $12.72 for overnight delivery. This reduces the processing time to two to three weeks, door-to-door, so is suitable for those who need their applications processed more quickly. Clearly mark the outside of the envelope with ‘Expedite’ if you wish to avail of this speedier service.
For those who urgently require additional visa space, appointments are available with local passport agencies. However, to grant an appointment most agencies will require a travel itinerary, to establish that the holder is travelling internationally within two weeks or applying for a visa within four weeks.
As a regular traveler with a growing collection of visa stamps, adding pages to your pasport or your second valid pasport is a simple process. Those who go abroad often for work or pleasure commonly use this service. If you are careful with the application process and allow plenty of time, amending your passport won’t be any inconvenience.
