When people think of combining history with a get-away, usually one thinks of the castles and museums of Europe. But one of the most fulfilling historical adventures is out in the American west. There is a surprising amount of nostalgia in a western ranch vacations, even for those who don’t believe themselves to be Wild West fans.

Dude ranches come in many forms. The strict historical ones have reenactments much like Colonial Williamsburg. Others have a more modern feel and focus on being outside, riding horses, and hiking. And others entirely have their focus revolving around hunting.

Dude ranches have very specific target markets, so you may meet up with like-minded people. That said, you have a lot of choice over the exact type of dude ranch and a huge area from which to choose. Dude ranches span most of the United States and go up into Canada and down into Mexico. You can therefore enjoy one of these vacations at any time of the year in a wide span of prices.

Dude ranches are not specifically for children or for adults, so you are capable of designing your own vacation in order to please everyone. For quality assurance, go through the Dude Ranchers’ Association, which represents the best vacation spots and makes sure they all follow the guidelines and regulations of the Association and Federal and state laws.

Those laws are put most to the test when it comes to the debated subject of hunting at dude ranches. Animals are even imported for the experience, which may make some visitors uneasy. However, if you book through the Association, they can assuage those fears by making sure everything is well looked-into and legal.

Dude ranches are peaceful retreats but still provide a lot of life and experience for their guests. Lodging is inexpensive and, on average, can be under a thousand dollars for a family trip lasting a week. That can include activities and food–not just lodging!
